University students’ conceptions of the “good” teacher: What do Hong Kong tertiary students think?
One way that universities assess teaching effectiveness is by eliciting student feedback, usually in the form of responses to an institutional survey which asks students to judge the performance of their teacher according to specified criteria. However, by what standards do the students themselves judge whether a lecturer is a “good” or a “bad” teacher? As part of a study carried out at a university in Hong Kong which examined the language-related challenges non-native English speaking students faced when making the transition to English-medium higher education in Hong Kong, students were interviewed about their first-year learning experience and asked what they felt constituted “good’ and “bad” teaching. Unlike when asked to complete teacher effectiveness surveys, no criteria or characteristics were suggested. The responses focused primarily on how effective the teachers were in motivating their class and the degree to which their teaching was systematic and clear. The results have potential implications for institutions both in terms of the design of their teaching effectiveness surveys as well as their teacher development initiatives.
English language learning beyond the formal curriculum
This talk will comprise three sections. In the first, in order to provide the pedagogical context, I will review how English language teaching methodology has developed over the past century in Europe, the US and China. The second part of the talk will very briefly focus on defining what we mean by the term “the formal curriculum”, before then moving on to the main focus of the presentation – what learning and teaching opportunities lie beyond the formal curriculum? We will firstly examine this question from a historical perspective, from Confucius to latter day proponents of independent and autonomous learning, considering briefly the educational thinking that has underpinned developments in more informal modes of education. Finally, four twenty-first century trends in language learning beyond the curriculum will be presented and discussed.
